How does the GSM wireless standard fit in the general context of communications technologies?
  • Other wireless technologies - Cellular, mobile radio, packet data, satellite and others: each one has different capabilities and different geographical coverage.
  • Packet data - Wireless packet switching technology provides data-only capability. It optimizes the wireless transmission technique for the most common message length of around 50 characters.
  • Satellite technologies - Satellite services for land mobile applications were originally targeted at geographic areas which other systems are not able to reach.
  • Mobile radio technologies - Mobile radio is used primarily for dispatch applications by the emergency services, transport sector and utilities.
  • PHS - PHS (Personal Handyphone System) was developed in Japan and enables a cordless phone to be used at home or in the office and outside like a cellular phone.
