SingTel Mobile, NTT DoCoMo and CWC Launch Wideband-CDMA Trial in Singapore

The trial, expected to last two years, aims to evaluate and understand the performance and service capabilities of the experimental W-CDMA system in Singapore. A third generation W-CDMA system is capable of providing high-resolution video and high-speed Internet connections as well as voice and fax transmissions at a speed of up to 2 Mbps over the air interface.

Another year of dramatic growth by GSM networks

Early indications hint that 1998 was yet another record breaking year for global GSM take-up, said the GSM Association today, as year end totals are expected to show 135 million customers - exceeding early industry predictions by as much as 15 million. "We believe that around 65 million customers signed up for GSM services in 1998," said Richard Midgett, Chairman of the GSM Association. "On the back of this, we predict with confidence that the 1999 year end total could soar as high as 250 million."

Ericsson offers proposal to harmonize third-generation mobile communications

Ericsson today announced a solution to complete the harmonization of third- generation mobile communication standards. It would allow operators to migrate to third-generation (3G) mobile communications independent of their current technologies. The solution from Ericsson would harmonize WCDMA and cdma2000 systems making it possible to produce low-cost dual-mode mobile phones and terminals to serve users across the two system standards.

Bluetooth Bites Into Wireless: Vendor group has plans to incorporate spec into all types of portables

Although Bluetooth isn't expected to hit its stride until 2000, the wireless technology for short-range communications between mobile devices is beginning to build momentum.  To date, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, formed by Intel Corp., Ericsson Inc., Nokia Corp., Toshiba Corp. and IBM, has recruited 220 members.   Bluetooth will help users share data between notebook PCs, handheld devices and smart phones as well as connect to LANs.

Toshiba Takes Cell-Phone Research to Europe

Japanese technology giant Toshiba said Thursday that it will open a cellular-phone technology research laboratory in the United Kingdom next month that will initially develop multimedia applications for next-generation cellular phones.
