Not all PCS operators have deployed
data services on their networks as of date ¾
only GSM 1900 operators have
it so far. CDMA commercial data services are expected in 1998.

As of March 1998:
The information on this page refers
only to circuit-switched networks. Data services on packet-switched
networks are expected to be here in the near future, and are being
developed right now. Click here to find out about the status
of the development of future packet-switched data services.
Status
of GSM 1900 data services:
Data service at 9,600 bps is currently
available from most US GSM service providers, including Omnipoint,
Western Wireless and BellSouth
DCS. Current gateways are into
the PSTN (regular telephone network) for end-to-end, modem-based
communications.
Short message service (SMS) is available
today. Mobiles can receive messages from the Internet and can
originate messages destined for other mobile phones.
Status
of CDMA data services:
North American CDMA networks are
projected to have data/fax services over their networks available
in 1998. Click
